Morgan SUP revives luncheon tradition

Author and Lecturer Dave Newman gave a great presentation on the life of Orrin Porter Rockwell.

On Monday, Oct. 16 the Morgan Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers met for their monthly gathering at the historic Morgan Rock Chapel.  Reviving a previous luncheon tradition of a “Pioneer Minute”, chapter member Kelly Wright introduced himself and talked about his family heritage. He shared some of his father and grandfather’s history and his own experiences growing up in Granite Utah.  Kelly served in the Sao Paulo North, Brazil Mission. and graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a law degree. After practicing in Idaho he moved to Utah and eventually served two terms as Morgan County Attorney. He and his wife Lisa served in the Auckland, New Zealand mission and are the parents of 11 children and 34 grandchildren from their two combined families.

After a wonderful lunch from Larry’s Spring Chicken Inn, the group heard from Dave Newman, author, educator, photographer, and lecturer. Mr. Newman served a full-time mission to Berlin Germany and ran a successful photography studio in Holliday, Utah for 35 years. He has authored several books on photography and holds multiple degrees in the same. Dave has lectured throughout the world and retired as an adjunct professor from BYU-Hawaii. He discussed the life and legend of Orrin Porter Rockwell, a faithful friend and bodyguard to Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.  Rockwell served as a lawman in the Utah Territory, a businessman, and bounty hunter. He had many nicknames including “Old Port” and “The Destroying Angel of Mormondom”. Orrin Porter Rockwell was well known throughout the West and was credited with and accused of many things, some true and many, probably not. λ
