December School Board meeting

Jan 09, 2024 10:46AM ● By Gwen Romero

The weather outside may be frightful, but MCSD’s low fraud risk is delightful. This and other updates were the hot topics at this month’s meeting of the Morgan School District Board of Education.

First, MCSD is reaping the benefits of two key grants that are funding some of our work to improve safety on our campuses and to provide more support for our students. With a $2.5 million safety grant, the district is installing better security systems in each building, implementing better emergency communication systems, updating our emergency response kits (including AEDs and evacuation kits), and improving fencing, gates, and door locks, among other basic safety features.

At the high school, we now have our Connection Center running, addressing mental health, hygiene, and other student needs, while our middle schools offer similar services through their wellness centers.

Back to fraud. Our annual fraud risk report is in. A score of 355 or better is considered low risk, and MCSD scored an impressive 375 out of 395 – as determined by an outside auditor. Morgan was noted for our separation of duties, which minimizes potential risks. We also use an outside firm to monitor bank reconciliation, as we honor the trust the community gives us in managing funds to support educational outcomes.

Are you frustrated with our current Student Information System (ie. Aspire)? You’ll be happy to learn that MCSD will be transitioning to PowerSchool by the 2024-2025 school year. PowerSchool includes a variety of tools that will help us to better track student assessments and attendance. More information will be provided in the spring.

Other good news is that the Croydon bridge is set to be finished later this month. Families will soon be able to connect directly with the interstate again rather than having to commute via Henefer. Also, the overflow parking next to Morgan Elementary School will be available by spring, just in time for spring sports.

The board members wrapped up the meeting with their reports on the ongoing challenges and successes that the various schools and departments are addressing. To which President Gaylene Adams said, “Do we still have problems in the district? Yea, we do. But [each] of these schools are tackling those challenges together with their community councils and parents.”

The next board meeting is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2024, at 5.
