The Morgan grapplers have been busy building their skills as they continue to compete against top competition to prepare them for the divisional and state tournaments. Coach Kelly Wilson reports that his team has been struggling with injuries and illness, but he is hopeful his wrestlers will soon be healthy and able to compete at the level they will need against tough region competition like South Summit and the top-ranked 3A team in the state, Juab. Both will wrestle Morgan, along with Wasatch, in the coming weeks to test the Trojans as they prepare to do battle in the end-of-season tournaments.
At the Richardson Memorial Tournament last weekend in Tremonton, Morgan, still down starting wrestlers due to injury and illness, placed four wrestlers on the podium.
Zak Sargent (190) advanced to the championship bout with three victories by fall. His longest match was 4:29 with the other two pins coming in the first period (1:18, 1:31). In the finals, Sargent wrestled a tough match against Olympus’ Andre Leota, losing by decision 8-4, to finish second.
Luke Woolsey, who Coach Wilson is happy to see back in the lineup after recovering from a knee injury, placed fourth in his first tournament back on the mat. Woolsey (132) fell in the semifinals to Star Valley’s Tel Parry, won his next match, and then placed fourth after a close match in the Consolation Finals.
At 144 pounds, Sim Wardell fell in the second round and then won five consecutive consolation matches to qualify for the 3rd Place Match. Wardell fought South Summit’s Brandon Mora to a 0-0 tie at the end of three periods before falling 2-0 in a sudden victory to place fourth.
Krew Galbraith (175) suffered a quarterfinal loss by fall (3:11), but he rebounded to win his next two matches in the consolation bracket and then placed sixth.
Coach Wilson noted, “Richardson Memorial is a tough tournament. We placed four, even though it would have been nice to see more of our guys on the podium. We’re still wrestling short with Drew and Ryler out with elbow injuries sustained in Reno, and other illnesses traveling through the team.”
“The guys battled hard!” he explained. “It’s been hard to have so many kids out sick. We had 20 people out sick the night we wrestled Union in Morgan.”
“The Richardson Memorial showed us how tough South Summit is this year,” he commented. The Wildcats took second to 6A Westgate in the tournament. Wilson continued, “We are hosting Juab on Jan. 24 and traveling to South Summit the next night. It would be great to see everyone healthy.”
Morgan looks to retain its Region 13 title with wins over South Summit and Grantsville. The Trojans overpowered Ben Lomond 81-0 and Odgen 84-0 on January 3 in a tri-dual. They wrestled Grantsville in Grantsville Jan. 11 and will compete at the Rumble this weekend.
The final home matches for the year will be Jan. 17 against Wasatch and Jan. 24 against Juab. Come out and see some great wrestling as the Trojans take on these two powerhouse, state contenders.
