Kate Heywood-3200 M State Champion
After leading a tight 3200m race for five laps, senior Kate Heywood ran behind Union’s freshman Jaylie Jenkins for laps six and seven before recording a final 400m in 1:11.14, outpacing Jenkins by over three seconds, to earn her first individual track state title with a 11:24.99 time. Jenkins finished second in 11:28.08 with the next two four runners almost thirty seconds behind the front runners.
Kate Heywood-1600 M State Champion
In another highly contested race, Kate Heywood ran her own race and won her third state championship of the weekend. Heywood ran just behind North Sanpete’s Madelyn Christensen for the first three laps before she made her move and recorded a 1:11.31 final 400 m to pass Christensen and finish in 5:17.99, almost four seconds faster than second place (5:22.43). Heywood’s race strategy once again paid off with a gold medal.
Grace Gordon-400 M State Champion
Junior Grace Gordon earned an individual championship in the 400m race with a time of 57.13. She topped Canyon View’s Addy Pace (57.21) and Ben Lomond’s Leslie Torres (58.59).
Robby Cameron- 400 M State Champion
In a tight race, senior Robby Cameron outlasted his teammate Brogan Garrett and Grantsville’s Kyler Wright to bring home the state title in the long sprint, 400 meters. Cameron clocked a 50.26, just .05 faster than the second place runners, who tied at 50.31, until the times were split into thousandths of a second with Wright winning 50.306 to Garrett’s 50.307.
Tanner Stanley- 200 M State Champion
In the 200m race, Tanner Stanley won bragging rights, not only for 3A, but also at the MHS track, by barely defeating the Trojan’s Robby Cameron and 400m State Champion 22.36 to 22.53. Morgan teammate Brogan Garrett also found a spot on the podium at 7th.
Girls’ Medley Team-State Champions
The MHS Girls Medley Team (200m, 200m, 400m, 800m) took the state title in 4:18.21, topping Canyon View by three seconds (4:21.11). Running the 200 legs were Brier Gailey and Lucy Tripp, Katlyn Sampson completed the 400 and Kate Heywood garnered her second state championship of the day running the 800m. Alternates on the team were Grace Gordon and Alexis Weiers.
The Morgan girls’ and boys’ track teams brought home second place titles from the 3A State Championships Saturday, May 21. In hard fought battles that came down to the final races, the Trojans came up just short in both the boys and girls’ events. Richfield took the state title from the boys’ team, 2021 state champions, with 100 points to Morgan’s 90. Union finished third with 66 points, and Delta was fourth with 50.5 points. Delta’s girls earned first place in the girls’ event with 96 points. Morgan and Union shared second place with an 88.5 point tie and Canyon View took fourth (78 points).
